Dear Andrew
Thank you for your important question as above. The responsibility of protecting the public from harmful effects of radiation falls squarely on the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR), as can be seen from the beginning of the NNR Act 1999, as amended. As it happens, I asked the same question of the NNR over a decade ago. The then CEO agreed it was something the NNR should look into.
I’d like to ask that you please follow up on your question, and direct it to the Nuclear Regulator, requesting a timeline for them to implement measures. Countries such as Japan have implemented a testing system for seafood, and a concern is that fish which fail, or are likely to fail, that testing are exported to South Africa, where no testing equipment exists. This means the NNR is failing to fulfil it’s mandate.
