Good day Minister Cele,
My name is Qhamani, I am a 23-year-old female from Cape Town and on the 02 October 2020 I experienced a carjacking in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. I was visiting a photographer whom I worked with before because I had recently bought new photography equipment with my tax return money to advance my photography skills so I decided to go to him at his container where he fixes phones and broken screens so that he can show me how the stuff is used since he has worked with them before. I stayed there for about 20 minutes. when he was done showing me how the stuff works, his girlfriend walked me to my car which was parked opposite his container. I got into my car and i opened the left window to say goodbye to his girlfriend because we are friends. The guy (owner of the container) left immediately after I got into my car, he told us that he is going to Mitchel's Plein with the daughter of his girlfriend. They left and his girlfriend and I spoke for about 5 minutes when two guys came out of nowhere, pointed guns at us and told us to give them our phones, we did as they asked. They then told me to get out of the car and I did. they drove off with my car which had equipment worth +-R80000. I immediately ran to a friend who works 2 mins away from where the guy's container is located to ask for a phone which I used to contact my mother. my mother immediately contacted the tracking company. I ran to Lingelethu Police Station to open a case. A police officer came and took down my statement and details. During the time which he did that the tracking company called my mom to tell them that the car was seen in site B, Khayelitsha 5 mins ago. instead of getting a van and rushing there, the police guys said we should wait, for what? I don't know. 2 hours passed and then my mom received a call from the tracking company to tell her that they found the car but with none of the valuables that the carjackers drove off with.
I am writing this letter to you tata out of range because I believe that had the police officers not dismissed what my mother had told them about the whereabouts of the car, it could have been found with my valuables and the criminals in it. I want the criminals found. I want my equipment found. I am unemployment and my mother put herself in debt to buy that equipment for me so that I can start working towards reaching my goals. she is still paying off that debt even now. My mother cannot pay for something that was stolen/ taken from us. that is unfair. I am angry and traumatized because of what I experienced tata. right now I do not have anything. they took everything from me even my i.d card, my phone, my bank card and drivers license. I don't know what you can do tata but please do something. I struggle to sleep at night because when the car was found, there were no keys, our house keys were attached to the car-keys and my dad's personal documents were in the car, even our proof of address. My family and I do not feel safe. we do not know if/when the guys will come and break into our house.
