Dear Honourable Minister Gayton McKenzie,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is [Your Name], and I am writing to you as a concerned citizen and a professional in the field of Entomology. I am a coloured female from Grassy Park, Cape Town, who has dedicated years of hard work and study to contribute to the cultural and scientific landscape of our country.

After receiving scholarships that supported my education for thirteen years, I proudly earned a PhD degree and have since been completing a three-year postdoctoral fellowship as an Assistant Curator of Entomology at the Iziko South African Museum. This opportunity has allowed me to delve deep into my passion for entomology and contribute meaningfully to our understanding of South Africa’s natural heritage.

However, despite my qualifications and dedication, I find myself in a distressing predicament. The lack of adequate funding from government sources has severely limited the opportunities available to me within the Western Cape and indeed, within South Africa as a whole. As a result, I am facing the harsh reality that I may be forced to seek employment abroad, solely because of the scarcity of opportunities for individuals of my background in our country.

Honourable Minister, it pains me to contemplate leaving South Africa. This is my home, and I believe that I possess valuable skills and knowledge that could greatly benefit our nation. My passion lies in contributing to the advancement of our cultural and scientific institutions, and it is my heartfelt desire to continue doing so within our borders.

I implore you, Honourable Minister, to consider the plight of professionals like myself who are committed to serving our country but are hindered by systemic challenges beyond our control. I urge you to advocate for increased support and funding for cultural and scientific endeavours, particularly those that promote diversity and inclusion within our workforce.

I stand ready and willing to contribute to any efforts aimed at strengthening our cultural and scientific sectors. I am eager to continue my career in South Africa, where my skills and expertise can be put to the best possible use for the benefit of our society.

Thank you for considering my appeal. I look forward to your response and hope for a positive resolution to this pressing issue.

Yours sincerely,
Dr M.L. Gordon
