Dear Ms. Didiza,
In 1994, we, the people of South Africa initiated an experiment in nation-building, seeking to reconcile the African and European races into a united nation. We initiated the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Reconstruction and development Program and Affirmative Action as some of the ways to address the imbalances of the past, especially to forge national unity.
Have we succeeded in our attempt to forge national unity? I don't know. But is it at all possible that maybe some of our current challenges as a nation are a result of failures in our nation-building exercise? Possibly. How would we know if we are succeeding or failing as a nation without holding some national dialogue to review our progress?
If we don't establish a national dialogue, who stands to benefit from our division as a nation?
Looking at the current world developments in geopolitics and decisions we need to take as a nation regarding various things such as climate change and alignment to a more equitable new world order, wouldn't these reasons serve to highlight the urgency of a national dialogue?
My reason for writing this is to urge government to try again in initiating a national dialogue to help us understand where we are as a nation, and know what we can do for our nation.
With my best regards,
Goitsemang
