Dear Ms Majodina

Congratulations on your appointment as Minister of Water Affairs.

I would appreciate it if you could give prompt attention to the problems experienced with water supply & sewerage infrastructure in the UGU municipality district.

Residents hear the complaints of Johannesburg citizens who have been without water for a few days. Many KZN South Coast residents get no water for weeks & months at a time. In the south, water is on a rotational basis and residents are lucky if they get water in the two or three days when it is available in their village. A lot of houses have installed water tanks and pumps. Water is available at a cost of R1500.00 per 5000lt. Not many people are able to afford this amount - either weekly or monthly.

Static tanks for community use are refilled erratically. Tankers serve some inland communities but again, no regular schedule.

As for sewerage - with almost every good rain the pumps fail and raw sewerage ends up via the beaches and into the sea. The lifeblood of this coast is Tourism and the biggest draw card to the South coast are the beaches. Unacceptable high counts of ecoli in sea water is a huge health risk.
Time to rethink the maintenance of this system.

Good luck with your new post.
