Mr Hanekom,
I am pleased to see you back in the position of Minister of tourism. My partner who is a New Zealand citizen is having difficulty trying to arrange a visa to visit South Africa as a tourist.
I appreciate that the SA government requires visas for N Z citizens, after the New Zealand Govt. now requires a visa for South African citizens. I believe this is required as too many people were coming into New Zealand on forged South African passports.
Thats fair enough.
The difference is that the N Z Govt. arranged the granting of E Visas via the internet, which is a reasonable way to obtain a visa.
Unfortunately the Minister of Home Affairs, felt it necessary for NZ Citizens to travel to the nearest Embassy for a personal visit, often requiring a distance of some hundreds of kilometres to obtain this visa.
Also required were certified bank statements, suitable fund requirements, all travel arrangements, leaving your passport at the embassy for a period of time and a general feeling of making it difficult. to obtain this visa.
What made me respond to this unnecessary situation was when I overheard a work colleague on the phone to a friend saying dont bother visiting South Africa as the requirements for a visa are way beyond reasonable.
I was encouraged to read that Mozambique is now issuing visas at borders and airports for tourists. I also believe Ethiopia are going to be issuing E visas via the internet. maybe a first for Africa.
It seems to me that South Africa, a far more developed country than these two countries has not kept up with what are reasonable visa requirements, this is not helpful to tourism or for the countries image.
Now that Mr Ramaphosa is President I can only hope for the best for South Africa. Any help that you can bring would be appreciated.
