I have been trying to get an ID for my daughter. I went to two centres closest to the village where we live. A process that takes someone who is in a city few hours at the most took us 3 days of missed work, more than 100 kms drive and some rands. We started at Tzaneen on the first day to queue at 7 am. At 8 am when they opened they told us they only help people who booked online. We waited until 12 noon thinking we’d get help but nothing. Second day we went to Modjadjiskloof, we queued and were told the machines were offline after more than 3 hours waiting. On the third day, we were outside in a queue since 6 am. They were supposed to open at 8 am no officials insight until 8:40. When its comes to public service South Africa is failing. One only needs to try and access home affairs services as a poor marginalised person living in a rural area to see this. Minister you are busy trying to use technology to make services more accessible while at the same time removing this access to people who have always struggled with access. Technology is good, but first make sure that everyone has access to the same technology before you deny people who did not book online services and treat them like second hand citizens who don’t deserve it to be treated with dignity.
