Dear Minister Creecy
I, Dawn Brochenin, South African citizen formally object as my right under the South African Constitution to any form of Seismic Surveys within its Transkei Exploration Area off the East Coast of South Africa from now or any date in the future, by sHell Exploration or contracted service provider, such as Shearwater GeoServices or BigOIl.
I have lived and worked on the Wild Coast for 20 years as a community worker and you have NO idea how many local people depend on the ocean for their survival, in an area where 75% of families live off Government child grants.
The only attraction on the Wild Coast is the ocean and now you want sHell to come and 'air-bomb' our only resource..... the only reason visitors come to the Wild Coast is for the ocean and its natural beauty. There are tens of thousands of visitors to the Wild Coast each year for various ocean activities and this income is essential for local communities to sustain themselves.
We are situated in an area with more than 75% unemployment and now you want to increase this to 100% by taking away our only resource - the ocean!
The negative effects of Seismic bombing are everywhere!
Also, I do believe that the Wild Coast was chosen, as this is the largest coastline in South Africa with illiterate and uneducated communities, who won't ask questions....this total violation of our ocean and all it's creatures who communicate via sound and others, would NEVER be allowed to happen in Cape Town, Durban or other major centre.
How can this be allowed - please explain to me??
Furthermore, the impact of migrating mammals in the region will impact the ENTIRE South African ecosystem and plays a far greater role in fighting Climate Change through carbon sequestration and to the wider ecosystems across the South African Coastline.
You cannot replace our Wild Coast with Money - ever!
As a South African citizen, I demand that our democratic rights be upheld to Object to these environmentally damaging processes.
Please register me for all future communications regarding this matter, as an interested and affected party.
Yours in Saving the Wild Coast
