Dear Kgosientho Ramohgopa
The government focus on renewable energy and green hydrogen
South Africa's renewable energy sector is growing, driven primarily by its abundant solar and wind resources. The country's main renewable energy sources include solar (both PV and concentrated solar power) and wind, with other sources like hydro and biomass also playing a role. Despite this growth, fossil fuels still dominate the energy mix, but South Africa has set goals to increase its renewable capacity, with plans to reach 33% renewable electricity by 2030.
Key renewable energy sources
Solar energy: South Africa has one of the best solar resources in the world, with solar PV being the largest source of clean electricity. The country is seeing growth in solar panel manufacturing and has numerous large-scale projects.
Wind energy: Wind power is another major contributor, with significant wind energy projects being developed and built.
Hydropower: Hydropower contributes to the renewable mix, though it is less dominant than in other Southern African countries where it is often concentrated.
Biomass: Biomass is also a renewable energy source in the country.
Concentrated Solar Power (CSP): CSP projects, such as the Redstone CSP plant, are also part of the energy mix, utilizing thermal storage to provide electricity for longer periods.
South Africa's energy goals and challenges
Increased capacity: South Africa aims to reach 19 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, though achieving this requires significant investment of an estimated $35.6 billion.
Transitioning from fossil fuels: The country is working to reduce its reliance on coal, which currently accounts for most of its electricity generation.
Grid modernization: Renewable energy growth necessitates infrastructure development, including transmission and storage solutions, to ensure grid stability and reliability.
Balancing energy mix: South Africa is pursuing a balanced energy mix that includes nuclear and clean coal alongside wind and solar, as outlined in its integrated energy plans.
Key initiatives and projects
Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP): This program has been instrumental in the development of large-scale renewable energy projects, such as REISA in the Northern Cape.
South African Renewables Initiative: This initiative focuses on making renewable energy more affordable through public funding to help the country meet its 2030 goals.
Redstone CSP project: This is one of South Africa's largest renewable energy projects, designed to provide round-the-clock power to households and offset significant CO2 emissions.
