Dear Mr Steenhuisen

This is similar to an e-mail I have sent to the consumer complaints department.
Please could you investigate why some of the sugars,(most of the brands now) milks, sauces, sweets, have halaal symbols on the packaging. This includes regularly used consumer brands and other staple products from Pick And Pay, Woolworths and other shops. This seems to be a recent thing.

We cannot purport to have a non- religious government while seemingly slowly and quietly they just seemingly seem to be trading one religion for another.. Should we start to put all other religious symbols on the food products as well in order to protect other religions. As far as I remember South Africa is a majority Christian country and that needs to be protected as other religious countries seem to protect their religions.

As you well know, symbols are an important part of a country's heritage. The consumer council has said that it is not in their jurisdiction. I have also written to the president's office about this but as yet there has been no response.

Regards
Michelle
