Dear Ms Motshekga

Re-opening of school should not happen on 6th of May 2020. The Covid-19 disease has not reached its peak in South Africa. If we were to use the robot colour levels for which industries should be re-opened then industries such as churches, cinemas, restaurants and schools are in the red list. Meaning these are the industries that should go back last. Yet, while churches, cinemas etc. remain closed and will probably be the last to re-open you are expecting schools, which fall in the same category as these above industries, to go back in level 4 lockdown.

This is a disaster waiting to happen.

As a teacher in an age group considered high risk for Covid-19 I flatly refuse to put myself and my family at risk. Most of the flu's and infections I have experienced in my life time I have contracted them mostly from my students and this is the case for many teachers. Schools are a breeding ground for infectious diseases.

The Department of Education needs to look to alternative methods of educating the students of South Africa such as using SABC channels to broadcast lessons.

I would rather hand in my resignation and leave the teaching profession with immediate effect than go back to school. I am not prepared to risk my life or my family's life - not for you, South Africa or my profession..

Yours Sincerely
Anais
