Dear Barbra Creecy
Congratulations on your post.
I am writing to you this evening on behalf of many disgruntled commuters who used to use the Prasa rail service before 2020 Covid came upon us, thousands of commuters should commute on a daily basis between Durban and Kwadukuza formerly known as Stanger.
The rail services was distrupted in 2020 as we all know that Covid came and turned the country and economy upside down, after the country and economy was opened we as train commuters was faced by another tragedy as Prasa put out a statement that the rail network was severely vandalized and had to be rebuilt alot of commuters realized that without the train service they had no other feasible transport so they used taxis between Durban and Kwadukuza
after couple of months they realized that it was not worth traveling in the taxis and most of them had to either resign from there jobs or find alternate work near there houses some even died trying to make ends meet. Four years down the line and we are still realing the effects of Covid in our area as our main source of transport is still not operational and we are yet to hear a statement from Prasa on social media platforms or the local radio stations telling us the status of our trains between Durban and Kwadukuza.
The train network between Durban and Kwadukuza was one of the longest lines in the greater Durban Area and it was one of the busiest lines on the Prasa network, Prasa has re-instated alot of there line network in the Durban South and West regions but has failed to re-instate one of there longest line networks on the North Coast of Durban being the Durban to Kwadukuza line.
In conclusion I want to say that the taxi's are killing the commuters as the government is not subsidizing them in order for workers and scholars to reach tertiary institutions and work at a responsibley priced rate or the taxi's are being subsidized and there fees are high to make higher profits, only government can analyze this. Prasa has also not given the commuters alternate transport due to there lines not being repaired and left us with only the local privately owned taxi's to commute with.
Regards
Kabir
