Dear Mr Schreiber
I appeal for your assistance: We have an employee who has worked for us for 5 years. Her mother died when she was a young child. She has no documentation relating to her mother who died at Baragwaneth Hosp more than 30 years ago. Her father is unknown. With help from social workers we traced a distant relation in Matatiele but he could not give us any information.
This woman has contributed to UIF and a provident fund. My concern is that when she wants to claim from either of these funds, she will not be able to access them due to a lack of ID. Our local Home Affairs (Elliot) office told her to go to Ngcobo, where they said they could do nothing without a death/birth or ID of her mother.
This woman has a child due to write her matric exams. The child has no ID and the school says they can't register the child for the exam.
We went to the Elliot office with our local DA councillor, hoping he would be able to achieve something, but nothing.
She has been told (by a member of the public) that for a fee of R5000 she will get her ID. None of us want to use this route, but I understand why she has considered it.
PLEASE advise us where to go to, or what we can do to help this woman, that we can then assist her child. We will greatly appreciate any assistance. I do not want to put her name in this public message.
