Dear Minister Of Public Roads and safety.

Dear Sir/Madam
31 August 2021
The residents of Nanas informal settlement in Soweto have been on that land since February 2019,it was previously a farm belonging to a white farmer affectionately known as Nana and when this community of about 3000 occupied the land they named their informal settlement after Nana.Like many informal settlements they also have no services like water, sanitation and electricity.Their informal settlement is right next to the N12 freeway and for them to access shops and schools etc they have to cross the freeway into Protea which results in loss of life every now and then especially for school children who get knocked down by vehicles as they try to cross over to the other side.
This community feels forsaken by their own government who keep making empty promises about service delivery that amounts to nothing but a lie. When we were invited to the area on Sunday(29/08/2021) we were saddened by the appalling conditions that this community live under.Children and adults were seen running to the nearby bushes to answer the call of nature.
We were shocked to even see a few comrades glad in yellow t-shirts campaigning in the area, this poor community will be used as votes fodder then left to perish in poverty and disease.
We ask the Department of Human Settlement to intervene and see to it that these people are given their dignity back by being provided with the basic services they need.We also ask the Department of Transport to make sure that community is protected from the notorious freeway which has already claimed several lives,in the mornings and afternoons when children cross to and from school a scholar patrol will be really appreciated. The kids of Nanas informal settlement die like flies on that road, hopefully our government has some humanity to help these people out.
