Dear Mr Gayton McKenzie

I understand that this request may be a bold one, but what is life without taking risks?

I am currently in my final year studying Event Management at Boston City Campus and would love the opportunity to contribute to the event planning team for the potential Formula 1 Grand Prix in South Africa. Given our shared commitment to uplifting local communities and supporting historically marginalized groups, I believe my involvement would align well with the event’s broader impact goals.

To demonstrate my knowledge and passion for this project, I have outlined the significance of bringing Formula 1 back to South Africa, along with the benefits it would bring:

The Return of Formula 1 to South Africa

South Africa is actively working to reintroduce a Formula One Grand Prix, marking the sport’s long-awaited return to the African continent after more than three decades. The last South African Grand Prix was held in 1993 at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, where Alain Prost secured victory in a Williams.

Hosting a Grand Prix in South Africa would bring immense benefits, including economic growth, job creation, and increased global recognition. The event would boost tourism, support local businesses, and promote national pride while showcasing South Africa’s rich culture and breathtaking landscapes to a global audience. It would also enhance infrastructure, attract future investments, and foster the development of motorsport in Africa, providing a platform for emerging talent. Despite the costs, the long-term economic, cultural, and international prestige benefits make this a transformational opportunity.

Current Bids and Selection Process

Two key venues are currently under consideration:
• Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit: A historic track located approximately 30 km north of Johannesburg. While it has hosted F1 races in the past, it currently holds a Grade 2 certification from the FIA and would require upgrades to meet Grade 1 standards.
• Cape Town Street Circuit: A proposed urban track weaving through Cape Town’s scenic streets, including landmarks like the Cape Town Stadium and Lion’s Head mountain. This venue aims to offer a unique racing experience, potentially rivaling famous street circuits like Monaco.

A steering committee, led by South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, is evaluating these bids. A final decision is expected in the third quarter of 2025, with the goal of hosting the race in 2027.

Support from the Motorsport Community

The effort to bring F1 back to South Africa has gained significant support from key figures in motorsport. Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton has been a vocal advocate for an African Grand Prix, emphasizing the importance of the continent’s representation in the global racing calendar. He has engaged with stakeholders in both Rwanda and South Africa to push this initiative forward.

Why Cape Town is the Ideal Host City

Cape Town, frequently ranked as one of the world’s best cities, offers a unique blend of cultures, truly representing the essence of the “Rainbow Nation,” as described by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. At the heart of this diversity lies a rich heritage that deserves to be showcased on an international stage. A Grand Prix in Cape Town would not only highlight South Africa’s world-class tourism and infrastructure but also position the country as a premier global events destination.

I would love the opportunity to contribute my skills and knowledge to this historic event. I have also shared insights about global sporting events, including the Olympics, on my LinkedIn profile, which further reflect my passion for international event planning. Please let me know if there is an opportunity to get involved.

Looking forward to your response.

Yours Sincerely
Jean-Mari Audrey Böhmer
