Dear Mr Lekota,
Given the unrelenting queues at the Department of Home Affairs, I was surprised to find out that there are processes that expressly prevent citizens from using eHome Affairs services. Citizenship ideally should not have different classes linked to different privileges. Unfortunately DHA has created different classes of citizenship; those citizens that were born abroad, even to SA citizens, are expressly not allowed to use eHome Affairs services despite being lifelong residents in SA.
The question that has not been answered from DHA is whether this discrimination is unlawful or whether it can be justified in an open and democratic society in alignment with our Constitution? It certainly does not assist the DHA staff and citizens with limited options but to persist in long and often dehumanizing queues. I regularly use eHome Affairs services, but my family members add to the queues due to their class of SA citizenship, despite 40+ years of unbroken residency.
I sincerely believe that this is an issue that speaks to your lifelong agenda and the national outcomes you strive for.
