Dear Mrs Angie Motshekga,
I have launched a complaint with the Department of Basic Education against LorieLand Independent School in Centurion for the negligence and intimidation of my daughter Thokozile Ramokolo after she had a head injury in their school premises.
• On the 07 August 2019 as I was on my way home from work in Johannesburg I received a call from my medical aid (BankMed) number 021- 821 8001 at 16H48 that they have received a call from my daughter who is historically crying over the phone because she was injured at school. The Lady from Bank Med then asked if she can transfer my daughters call to my phone. I was then transfer to Thokozile who was crying over the phone complaining that she was injured at school she complained about a severe headache and her left eye being blur as well as dizziness. She tried to explain the whole incident but I was unable to hear her over the phone as she was crying.
• Upon my arrival at home I found Thokozile with red and swollen eyes she could not walk and very dizzy. I immediately took her to the nearby doctor for examinations as this was a serious head injury.
• The doctor examined her immediately and explained to me that she was badly injured on the head as the hit affected the nerve .The doctor (Dr Ramontja) gave her medications and asked me to do a follow up if she is not better she will have to admit her to hospital.
• When we arrived at home I asked Thokozile what happened at school.
1) A certain grade 8 boy hit her on her head with a leather soccer ball in the play area. When the ball hit her on the face she hit her head against the wall with a huge bang which had a nail on it.
2) Thokozile then went on to report the matter crying to one of the school teacher by the name of Mrs VAL.
3) Mrs Val responded and told Thokozile she has absolutely no sympathy for her and that she must go report the matter to the owner of the school HILDA.
4) HILDA responded by saying Thokozile must ask her mother to take her to the clinic or doctor and that she must go back to Mrs VAL.
5) MRS VAL then told Thokozile who was still crying and in pain that she is a Drama Queen she must go get some water and her school dairy.
6) This happened during second break no one called me on my phone nor was Thokozile offered any pain tablets.
7) MRS VAL then called up on the boy who kicked the ball on Thokozile Face and she told the boy that he must make this(Thokozile) face happy.
8) Three hours later MRS VAL came again to Thokozile who was still crying and told her you are still crying after 3 hours you are a “drama queen”. Thokozile still asked if she can call her mother as she is not well in which she was refused.
9) In Thokozile School diary I found a unsigned note written in red that reads as follows:
“Thoko was sitting where the boys were playing soccer. Hilda a teacher asked her to leave but she did not a soccer ball hit her on her head.Val. We monitered her and she was fine”
Now I find this very strange as a parent I take my child to Lorieland to be protected and cared for when she is within their premises. Out of their premises she is my responsibility. What is the role of the application form whereby we fill in emergency numbers , doctors numbers and medical aid details. I feel that my child was treated unfairly , rude, harassed and with negligence. How can they stay for such a long time with a child that has a head injury and not notify me instead I get a call hours later from my medical aid. The school has all my details in their file as well as secondary contact details. As a professional teachers and parents I am absolutely disappointed with their behaviour.
The school only gave me a call the following morning 08 August 2019 and HILDA wanted to know how is Thokozile! In which my response I told her I am not happy how the situation was handled why they didn’t give me a call and why did they treat Thokozile in such a manner. HILDA then felt offended and dropped the phone on my ear.
I then called and this time I talked to MRS VAL who denied everything claiming that she offered Thokozile sweets in her office.
The doctor that I send Thokozile to on the day of the incident recommended that if she is still not fine by Saturday the 10th of August as she examined her and found that she has a concussion I must bring her in again for check-up and she will take it from there. Saturday the 10th August we went for follow up consultation and she diagnosed Thokozile that she needs to go for counselling as she is traumatised her headache from the injury on Saturday 10th had still not yet cleared. At the moment I am busy organising a scan on her head as I fear she might have internal bleeding or clots. On Thursday the 8th of August 2019 in my daughters absence as she was booked off by the doctor the Vice principal by the name of Val came over to Thokozile class Grade 6 and asked were is the girl who was hit by the ball in which the children responded that she did not come and her response was that “Oh she might have gone to the doctor maybe her head popped”. The Grade six class now has been punished because of the incident they are allowed to go to the toilet once a day.
On Monday the 19th of August 2017 my daughter attended classes and was welcomed by a huge meeting from the teachers of Lorieland Independent school asking her what happened on the day of the incident then they threatened her that what ever they have told her will be turned around as they have very good lawyers. They even told her that she might of have had a migraine that day and insisted that she came to school angry the morning of the incident.
Val the vice principal as well as Hilda the school owner are incredibly rude to me when we communicate over the phone.
No child or parent deserves such treatment from people that we trust with our kids. Please can you intervene in this issue as the Basic Education Department as this is a sensitive issue.
I would appreciate it sir if you can assist me so that we can have a meeting with the school as I fear for the health and mentality of my child. This is having a huge impact on my child and I am afraid it will affect her school work as she is a incredibly intelligent child.
Your Sincerely,
Yolisa Ramokolo(Thokozile Mother)
