Dear Minister Creecy,

The widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in South Africa could present transformative economic and environmental benefits. Here’s why:

Financial Benefits to Treasury and Eskom: By shifting from petrol to electricity, South Africa could reduce its outflows of billions of rands in foreign exchange payments to oil companies. Instead, these funds would be directed to Eskom, bolstering the utility's financial stability and reinvesting money into the local economy.

Enhanced national cash flow: Even if EV charging equals filling up with petrol, it would still be better for South Africa as that money stays within the country. If it is cheaper, then the tax on charging could be increased or the "savings" could be passed onto the consumer.

National Energy Security: Reducing dependence on imported oil is critical for energy independence. China has embraced this strategy, banning new internal combustion vehicle sales to protect their economy from foreign oil price fluctuations and to strengthen their EV industry.

Strengthening Eskom: Transitioning to EVs could help stabilize Eskom's financial challenges which should help them with funding their operational issues. Strategic planning and investment will be crucial.

This transition represents a rare economic opportunity that South Africa must not overlook. I hope your department is considering a robust strategy to capitalize on these potential gains.
