Dear ma'am
My name is Lindiwe and I have a daughter who is studying at UCT towards her Psychology 1st year degree. Her name is Amahle Mgenge. Last year she did Law and changed this year. We applied for NSFAS last year and we were declined due to income greater than 350k per annum. I had to take multiple loans to pay for her fees.as I could not afford. This year a missing middle child was introduced and I was so happy since I qualify as I'm raising my kids alone and I fall within the category of not earning more than 600k per annum.
My daughter received a response from NSFAS that she must appeal within 21 days. We tried to press the appeal button up until 21 day passed. I tried to call NSFAS offices in Cape Town trying to explain the problem we were experiencing with my child but I could not get through as the phone wasn't picked up. We ended up not submitting her appeal. Last month I phoned one of the University's financial aid in Durban to enquire about my situation. The lady I spoke to got back to me saying that NSFAS told her there was nothing they could do as appeals were closed a long time ago. We are now in the dark as I can not take another loan on top of the 2 I took last year from different institutions. My baby passed her first term. I'm worried as a parent as UCT normally block students from registering and from returning to res if they owe money. Please help me. I'm so stressed because I don't have option B. My daughter is the one who gets more frustrated because she receives emails that are sent to me. I feel like I'm failing my children as a mother. I have two other children, one is at Primary and the other one is at High school. Please may you intervene in my case and God will help you.
