Good Morning Deputy Minister
I work for the University of Limpopo, and looking at the number of students from matric who showed up but have not applied, I think it's about time that the Government negotiate with cellular service providers to make all government funded tertiary institutions websites, including NSFAS be accessible for free so students can be able to apply even when they don't have data. This can make a huge difference. The application process can even be taken further and be made part of the Grade 12 Year Program to ensure everyone apply.
To address the shortage of space in our tertiary institutions, the government should introduce a double shift system for all these institutions where existing academic staff can can take the opportunity to work for extras, say 4 hours a day offering after hours classes and claim accordingly for those hours. I can assure you, the majority of our academic stuff would gladly welcome the opportunity to make more money, whilst the country addresses the lack of space in our institutions. Can you imagine the difference it will make if each government funded institution could take an extra 50 to 60 percent more students annually.
I attempted to send this directly to the Minister of Higher Education, but cannot DM her, and thought you'd be the best person to send this to, with the hope that you can raise it at a relevant forum.
Thank you.
